Bread from the
old country, daily.
An Armenian heritage bakery on West Victory Boulevard, Burbank. Hand-shaped lavash and matnakash, traditional pastries, gata, baklava, and the kind of bread that fed three generations. Open weekday mornings only.
Old-country recipes. Burbank oven.
Anahit Bakery brought the Armenian recipes from the old country to West Victory Boulevard in 2010. Anahit — Armenian for 'gift' — is what the bread is named after, and that's what the customers walk out with every weekday morning.
We hand-shape lavash and matnakash, blend gata dough by hand, fold baklava in the back, and bring it all out of the deck oven at seven-thirty in the morning. Whatever doesn't sell by five — we don't carry over.
Open Monday through Friday only. Closed weekends — we go to the farmers' market on Saturday and rest with our families on Sunday. Cash or card, same price.
What Burbank says.
"Anahit's lavash is the lavash my grandmother used to make in Yerevan. Three years of weekday mornings buying two packs of lavash and a gata. The smell hits the parking lot before the door does."
"Ordered the family pastry tray for a Sunday brunch and the entire family thought I'd flown them in from Beirut. Twelve people, forty-five dollars, every plate scraped."
"Walked in Tuesday morning at eight-fifteen and was eating a piece of warm gata in the parking lot by 8:18. The baklava came out of the oven while I was there. Real bakery."
